From the Principal – Cathy Bester
It is always so hectic at this time of the year that we often forget to stop and appreciate the special moments that lead up to the end of another school year. This is a time to celebrate with our children the achievements they have had this year.
Congratulations to all students on doing their best throughout 2023.
We have enjoyed celebrating with our Grade 6 students at their Celebration Dinner last week and farewelling them at our Grade 6 Assembly. We know that they leave their time with us at UPS well equipped to face the next stage in their education – high school.
It has been my privilege to have worked with an amazing and dedicated staff at Ulverstone Primary who are always there to support one another and our students. I would like to thank all staff for their continued commitment to ensuring all students at Ulverstone Primary are known, well, safe and learning.
When we look back at 2023 it is hard to believe that we have packed so much into 41 weeks of school. We have dressed up in bright colours, book week costumes, casual clothes, footy colours and Christmas clothes. Money has been raised to help support charities such as the Tim Blair Foundation and Make a Wish Foundation. We have attended performances and been on excursions. We have walked safely to school, competed in triathlons, run in the cross country, participated in our athletics carnival and learn to swim programs, had fun at sports days, tried golf, basketball, badminton and a variety of other sports during our PE time. Some of us represented our school at ANZAC and Remembrance Day, and the commemoration of Frank MacDonald’s 20 years of passing. Students have competed in the annual Maths Relay, UPS portrait competition and the Young Archies Awards, our 5/6 students set off on camp, and our Kinder children have grown an abundance of produce in their Stephanie Alexander Garden. Thank you to the support of Coles Ulverstone we won the annual scarecrow competition and Coles also raised $4, 596.30 to support our garden. What an amazing difference this has made to our kinder.
We have joined a partnership with The Smith Family and families have been able to sign up for Learning for Life Scholarships. Our students have participated in fire safety awareness with Firefighter Craig, Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure program, and Growth and Development program with Nurse Kayz.
As you can see there has been so much packed into each term, not to mention the amazing amount of learning everyone has been doing. What incredible growth our students have demonstrated which is reflected in their reports home last week.
I would like to acknowledge my appreciation for the support our School Association have continued to give me this year and thank them for their dedication to our school.
The end of the school year brings with it a time to acknowledge the dedication of our wonderful Ulverstone Primary School staff who all work so hard every day with our students. Unfortunately, this time of the year is also the time when we must say goodbye to some of the amazing people we work with each day. We are always sad to be farewelling our colleagues who are highly valued members of our school community.
Mrs Tara Kelly – Although Tara has been with us for a short time this year, she has had a positive impact on the students with whom she has worked. Tara has worked as an Education Support Specialist and Teacher Assistant during the past two terms. Congratulations Tara on your permanent appointment as an Education Support Specialist at East Devonport Primary.
Mrs Callie Collins – Callie has worked with us at Ulverstone Primary as a Teacher Assistant, Educational Support Specialist and Library Technician for the past 7 years. She has created a warm, welcoming environment in our library. Callie’s work with our Prep students with their reading has been exceptional and we have highly valued her work ethic and passion for helping students. We wish Callie all the best as she moves to East Ulverstone Primary to continue with her Educational Support specialist role.
Mrs Michelle Howard – Michelle has been a Teacher Assistant with us for 13 years and has been highly valued for the work she has done with so many of our students to reach their full potential. It has not been unusual for us to see Michelle out on the basketball court teaching students how to shoot hoops or dribble the basketball. We know that Michelle will continue to show the same care and support for students in her move to Penguin District School. All the best Michelle.
Ms Sharee Haberle – Sharee has worked with all students at UPS this year as our music teacher. We would like to thank Sharee for her contribution to our school during her time with us.
Mrs Jess Blackwell – We would like to congratulate Jess on being appointed into a leadership role at Havenview Primary for 2024. We know that her passion for teaching and supporting students that we have experienced at Ulverstone Primary will be a great asset in her new role. Good Luck Jess on your step into leadership.
Mrs Katie Lillico – Katie has been a valued member of staff for the past 7 years. Katie has taught Prep and 5/6 during her time with us. Her passion for teaching and for ensuring that every student in her class is known and achieving to the best of their potential is one of Katie’s greatest assets. We wish you all the very best Katie on this next chapter in your career.
Sharni Van Rooyen – Sharni has been an invaluable member of our staff as our Social Worker over the past several years. Although Sharni’s allocation to us has only been 1 day per week, her support for our staff and students has far exceeded this. We knew that we only had to call, and she would respond when we needed her. We thank you Sharni for being by our side and for the care you have given to us at UPS.
Janine Downward – Janine’s expertise and wisdom will be sadly missed at Ulverstone Primary. As our school psychologist Janine has assisted us with supports and strategies, we can utilise to best accommodate the needs of many of our students over the past several years. Janine has worked with us 1 day per week this year however she has always been available in times of need. Thank you, Janine, for your care and advice.
I would also like to thank Mrs Emmie Gee and Mrs Ally Pegus; Ally has taught 5/6 and Emmie 3/4 over the past two terms. We hope to see them again next year and thank them for being valued members of our team.
We would like to thank all staff for the contribution they make to our students’ education. Our staff come to work each day with a passion to make a difference in the lives of the young people with whom they work. At UPS we believe that we all have an important role to play in ensuring that our students are known, safe and learning.
We are looking forward to welcoming new staff to our amazing team next year:

Final Leavers’ Assembly – Grade 6 Major Awards 2023

Grade 6 Celebration Dinner
Last Thursday our Grade 6 students celebrated the end of their primary school years with a dinner at the Ulverstone Bowls Club. During the night Stella, Addi, Paige, Tyde and Shi-Ann shared some of their favourite memories of their time at Ulverstone Primary School. Everyone had a fantastic night enjoying each other’s company, eating great food, dancing and of course lots of laughs. Thank you to our amazing Grade 6 students for a fantastic year of learning and best wishes as you prepare for the next phase of your schooling at high school.
Teacher Congratulations
Mrs Carolyn McNaughton was recently recognised by the Department for Education, Children and Young People for her 25 years of service.
Carolyn’s dedication to providing the best possible learning opportunities for her students is to be commended.
Congratulation Mrs Mac!
Breakfast Club
As part of our Christmas celebrations, Breakfast Club held a special pancake breakfast, students were treated to pancakes with cream, maple syrup and raspberries. Thanks to Holly Lah for organising our delicious treat. A big thank you also to all our adults and student leaders who have helped out this year.
New School App
We will no longer be using the Schoolzine App from Term 1 in 2024. Our new app will be called School Stream. Please see the instructions below on how to load School Stream onto your device. Some families that have older siblings may already be familiar with the app and can add UPS to their profile. Going forward this is how the school will be communicating our events, absentees, newsletters, notices and forms. School Stream will enable us to replace sending home forms i.e. excursion notices, major excursion forms, etc. UPS will instead send this information to families via the app. Excursion and permission forms can be opened and completed on your device.

Asthma
Summer holidays are an important time for kids with asthma.
During all the festivities, please don’t forget to keep up your child's asthma management and medicine as prescribed. Good asthma management over the holidays means less time off school when kids return in the new year, and less time off work for you.
To make sure your child stays as healthy as possible over the break and into 2024, you can take the following steps:
- Check your child’s medication to make sure they’re still in date.
- Keep using your child’s preventer medicine as directed over the summer holidays, even if they’re feeling well.
- If you’re leaving the house or going on holiday, make sure you pack your child’s asthma medicine(s) and a spacer.
- Book an Asthma Review with your doctor to get an updated written Asthma Action Plan during the holidays - you'll need this for Term 1 2024. Book in early as doctors can have limited appointments over the Christmas period.
- Use Asthma Australia's School’s Checklist for parents and carers: https://asthma.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/AA_BTS2022_Asthma-Checklist__digital.pdf
If you would like more information or want to discuss ways that we can support you with your child’s health and wellbeing please feel free to email me anytime at kayz.parsons@decyp.tas.gov.au.
School Canteen
Please be aware that there will be no canteen on the first week back. School canteen will begin on Wednesday 14 February 2024.
